Rabbit in Malayalam

A rabbit is മുയൽ (muyal), two beats ending in the retroflex l, and the same word serves for a hare. It is what children learn in the first picture book and what you see on a pet shop board. The y in the middle is a glide, which keeps the two syllables running together.

Most common translation

മുയൽ (muyal)

Rabbit. A small long-eared animal that hops; hare.

മുയൽ വേഗത്തിൽ ഓടുന്നു.

muyal vegathil odunnu.

Dictionary entry

Malayalam does not split rabbit from hare, so muyal covers both; in zoological writing a qualifier is added when the distinction matters.
