Hearth in Malayalam
Be careful with this page. ഉദ്ധാനം (uddhanam) does list hearth among its senses, but it is an obscure Sanskritic word whose first meaning is vomiting, and nobody uses it for the kitchen fireplace.
Most common translation
Vomiting, hearth.
രാത്രിയിൽ രോഗിക്ക് ഉദ്ധാനം ഉണ്ടായി.
raathriyil rogikku uddhanam undaayi.
The patient had vomiting at night.
All Malayalam words for “hearth”
- ഉദ്ധാനം (uddhanam) — Vomiting, hearth.
- ജാതി (jaathi) — Caste, kind, tribe, race, rank, position, nut-meg tree, jasmine, hearth, fire-place.
ജാതി (jaathi) is also glossed as hearth, yet in living Malayalam it overwhelmingly means caste, along with kind, species and the nutmeg tree, so using it for a hearth would baffle a listener.
Common questions
How do you say hearth in Malayalam?
Not usefully from here. ഉദ്ധാനം (uddhanam) has hearth as a rare sense and ജാതി (jaathi) is really the word for caste.
What does jaathi mean day to day?
Caste in the social sense, and by extension a kind or species; it is also the name of the nutmeg tree.
